BIOGRAPHY Elizabeth grew up in Maine with every intention of being an artist. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts before graduating cum laude from Harvard University’s Extension School. While at Harvard she studied folklore and foreign literature and to this day remains fascinated by odd old stories. After ten years working as a children’s illustrator she got involved in a local theater group, costuming for the Company of Fools, whose popular version of Peter and the Wolf played at many venues including First Night Boston. Since then she has worked with Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, Prometheus Dance Company, the Contemporary Theater of Boston and the Jose Mateo Ballet Theater. She currently directs the costume shop at Behind The Mask studio and Theatre, and teaches art at the Brookline Art Center and the Eliot School. She loves doing fantasy as well as historical work and is just as happy building a tree as sewing a tailcoat.

ARTIST STATEMENT Because I’ve always been drawn to the fantastic oddity of fairy tales I started out as a children’s illustrator. After years working happily away on paper, I noticed that once I’d given everyone a wardrobe the fun was over. I tried eliminating boring backgrounds and began adding clothing for everything from chickens to demons. I eventually stumbled into making costumes. It’s a fact that dressing paper people is definitely easier. They don’t move much, they readily wear whatever you tell them to and the fabric store in my mind always has just the right pattern in just the right color. But there is nothing that beats the thrill of seeing a character that started out in your head come alive on the stage. Fabric has weight and texture and a life of its own. Actors and directors are unpredictable people with energy and ideas of their own, and clothing doesn’t make the man, it only introduces him. But the result is magical for me exactly because it is always a surprise, and because, as trivial as they are, ribbons and scraps are an essential part of the alchemy that creates your father’s ghost. My head fills with ghosts: pirates and fools, terrifying old women and drowned maidens. They are the blood of the stories that hold us fast in our seats catching our breath for the next scene and their characters break down the doors of my mind, they cry to come spilling out and I cannot stop them. |
